A live electronic music performance staged on the Xin'an River in Jiande, a county-level city administered by Hangzhou, has brought China's natural scenery to a global audience via digital platforms.
Held on March 13, the show — part of the Audio Archives project initiated by clothing brand Carhartt WIP — featured four musicians performing aboard a moving boat. The event was livestreamed on platforms including Twitch and Instagram, drawing international viewers who flooded the chat with real-time reactions.
Blending flute, synthesizers and ambient river sounds, the 40-minute performance turned the surrounding mountains and water into part of the composition. Shanghai-based platform byyb.radio led the production, aiming to present a flowing and poetic image of China through music and the internet.
The event was facilitated by local youth initiatives in Jiande, including the Rural Dreamer program, which has attracted hundreds of creative operators to the countryside. Organizers say such cross-disciplinary projects are helping connect rural China with global audiences, offering a fresh pathway for cultural outreach and rural vitalization.
